school board

School Boards

School Boards are partnership bodies of parents, schools, school staff and co-opted members. The main functions of a School Board are to promote contact and the exchange of information among the school, parents and the wider community.

A School Board should help to improve parents' understanding of what the school is trying to achieve, and should carry out its functions with a view to raising the standard of education at the school.

School Boards are composed of three types of members: parent members; staff members; and co-opted members. A co-opted member who also happens to be a parent of a child within the school will still be classed as a parent member.
